PET OF THE MONTH
Archie was bought into us in the early hours of the morning as he had been in a road traffic accident. Archie had an obvious open fracture to his right hind but the extent of his injuries was unknown until the morning where he was sedated and radiographed.
The radiograph revealed a fracture dislocation to his right hock, there was also massive contamination and instability of the ligaments. Unfortunately we were unable to save Archie’s leg and he had to have it amputated.
Archie also had a wound to his left hind which we cleaned and dressed.
The operation went well. After the operation Archie was provided with a padded bed and plenty of pain relief. Archie was a little distressed post operation and needed lots of reassurance to help keep him calm.
The next day Archie was taken to a carpeted area of the practice, where he was managing to get about amazingly!
Archie went home that afternoon for cage rest. Archie was seen back a few days later and was doing well, he wasn’t very keen to stay in a cage so was allowed to have room rest.
Archie has now had his stitches removed and is coping well.
